Cremation cost in the United States averages about $2,200 for direct cremation with no ceremony, and the national median for a funeral with cremation is $6,280 (NFDA, 2024). Prices run from under $1,000 in competitive states to over $3,000 in the priciest ones, so your state and provider choice matter most.

When a loved one dies, the cremation cost is often the first hard number a family has to face, usually within a day or two of the death. This page gives you the researched national picture first, then the price in your state, then the steps to make sure you do not overpay. Every figure on this site comes from published price research and national funeral industry data, and each state page names its sources and the date they were checked.

The average cremation cost in 2026

There are two common ways to buy cremation, and they sit at very different price points. Direct cremation is the simple option: no viewing, no ceremony at the funeral home, just the cremation itself and the paperwork. Cremation with a funeral service adds a viewing or a ceremony, staff time, and often a rental casket, at the same provider.

About 63% of funerals in the United States now involve cremation, and cost is one of the main reasons families choose it. But the national average is only a starting point. The same direct cremation that averages $1,264 in Oregon averages $3,183 in North Dakota, and within one city, two providers can differ by more than $1,000 for the same service.

A figure tagged Estimate is a modelled estimate, not a published price: a lowest found price set at 60% of the state average where no starting price is published, or a cremation-with-service average scaled from the NFDA national median where no state figure is published. The methodology page explains both.

The five cheapest states for direct cremation are Oregon ($1,264), Nevada ($1,428), Arizona ($1,430), Washington ($1,460), Hawaii ($1,547). The five priciest are North Dakota ($3,183), Connecticut ($3,150), Iowa ($2,992), Nebraska ($2,969), Minnesota ($2,914). If your state sits at the expensive end, do not assume the average is the price you must pay: in most states the lowest all-inclusive price found is hundreds of dollars below the average, because dedicated cremation providers undercut traditional funeral homes.

What a cremation price includes, and what it leaves out

A quoted cremation price is not always the final bill. Understanding the parts helps you compare quotes fairly. The full line-by-line version is on our cremation cost breakdown page; the short version follows.

Cremation cost calculator

Estimates use researched state averages from our price dataset. Where a state publishes no with-service average or no starting price, the calculator uses our estimate for that figure instead; the state tables tag those figures Estimate, and the methodology page explains how they are built. Your actual quote depends on the provider. Always compare the General Price List of two or three providers before you decide.

How to keep the cost down without cutting corners

Most families can save several hundred dollars with three habits. First, compare at least three providers using their General Price Lists, which the FTC Funeral Rule requires them to share. Second, consider a dedicated cremation provider or an online cremation service, which often charge far less than a full-service funeral home for the same direct cremation. Third, hold the memorial somewhere meaningful but free or cheap, such as at home, in a park, or in a place of worship, after the ashes come back. Our guides on cheap cremation and ways to save on cremation walk through each step, and the direct cremation guide explains the simplest option in full.

One warning: the lowest advertised price is not always the lowest final bill. Check what the price includes, ask about transport distance and certificate fees, and get the total in writing before you sign. A fair provider will explain every line without pressure.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cremation cost on average?

Direct cremation averages about $2,195 across the 50 states in our researched dataset. A funeral with cremation has a national median of $6,280 (NFDA, 2024). The exact price depends on your state, the provider you choose, and which extras you add.

What is the cheapest way to be cremated?

Direct cremation is the cheapest option. The provider collects your loved one, completes the paperwork, carries out the cremation, and returns the ashes, with no viewing or ceremony at the funeral home. Prices start under $1,000 in competitive states such as Florida, Pennsylvania and New Mexico, and you can hold a memorial later at home or in a place of worship.

What is included in a direct cremation price?

A standard direct cremation price normally covers collection and transport, the basic services fee, a simple container for the cremation, the crematory fee, permits, and the return of ashes in a basic container. Certified copies of the death certificate, an upgraded urn, and newspaper obituaries usually cost extra.

Why do cremation prices vary so much between providers?

Prices vary mainly because of provider overheads and local competition: full-service funeral homes carry higher overheads and include staff time for arrangements, while dedicated cremation providers run leaner operations. State rules, crematory ownership, and how much competition exists locally also move the price, so two providers on the same street can charge very different prices. Comparing at least three General Price Lists is the most reliable way to find a fair price.

Is cremation cheaper than burial?

Yes, in almost every case. The national median cost of a funeral with cremation is $6,280, against $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial, and burial also adds a cemetery plot, a headstone, and opening and closing fees. Our full comparison is on the cremation vs burial cost page.

How do I get an exact cremation price before I commit?

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral provider must hand you its itemized General Price List when you ask, by phone or in person, and must give prices over the phone. Ask for it before you commit. You can choose only the items you want and decline packaged extras.
